This is overkill, you need to know the LPI, not the DPI of the final output.

Take your typical newspaper, the use 85LPI. Say you need a 6x4 picture, to
get an acceptable print multiply the LPI by 2 (85x2=170) then multiply this
by your dimensions (6x170=1020 & 4x170=680), you therefore need to render
the desired image at that resolution using square pixels.

Magzines are usually printed at 133LPI & above, the same math applies and
at 133LPI you should come out with a 1596x1064 image.

Save it as either a TIFF or TARGA file, Photoshop loads these just fine.

BTW, I get these figures and information from my other job. A print design
shop, that does a local airline magazine, several monthly "auto trader"
type publications, mail-order brides mags, and numerous other print works.
